The ESG-Corporate Financial Performance Relationship

05 March 2019, 12:15 PM | Sydney
CFA Society Sydney | 1 CE

The Google search interest of “ESG” in a financial context has increased by the factor 10 in the last 3 years. It has become a truly global search interest in developed and emerging markets.

Academic output has also massively increased in the last 10 years. In light of this, DWS & the University of Hamburg evaluated more than 2,000 empirical studies on ESG with a very clear result. About 50 percent of the studies showed a significant positive correlation between ESG and financial results, while less than 10 percent pointed to a negative one. The remaining studies stated a neutral effect. This makes for a clear business case for responsible investing. The prejudice that responsible for investing curbs financial returns has been empirically refuted.
