In light of the COVID-19 outbreak, Bank Negara Malaysia announced a series of regulatory and supervisory measures since 27 Feb 2020 to support the efforts of banking institutions to assist individuals, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and corporations in managing the impact of the outbreak. These measures aimed to alleviate the challenges faced by individuals and businesses experiencing temporary financial constraints due to the outbreak, preserving jobs and ensuring continuity of viable business, while ensuring that the financial intermediation function of the financial sector remains intact, access to financing continues to be available, and banking institutions remain focused on supporting the economy during these exceptional circumstances. While a much welcomed measure to borrowers and businesses, these are expected to have longer-term implications to the banking industry.
