The Islamic finance industry is a relatively new entrant to the world of finance. To compete with the conventional players, the Islamic financial institutions (IFIs) must provide a unique and an attractive proposition to consumers and investors. Not forgetting, the IFIs has to navigate around the additional compliance responsibilities in Shariah requirements.
As such, the IFIs have to constantly innovate to stay competitive and better serve the needs of consumers and investors. This panel discusses various interesting and thought provoking concepts of Islamic banking in Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

Justin Ong, CFA, is currently a Partner with Deloitte Southeast Asia, leading the financial and regulatory risk practice. He has worked with over 50 financial services institutions in the regions, across Asia Pacific, Europe and Africa. He supported Board and C-suites in their transformation programme, focusing on capital, finance, risk, compliance and audit related matters. Within CFA Society Malaysia, Justin served as the Director on the Board since 2015, became Vice President in 2017 and ascended as President in 2019. He was the pioneer for the CFA Society Malaysia's Career Day as well as the Society's Representative in Asia Pacific Research Exchange (ARX). In the past, he was recognized as the finalist of the Asia-Pacific CFA society leader volunteer of the year. Justin holds a Bachelor of Accounting (Hons) from the University of Malaya and he is currently a PhD candidate in Islamic Finance with the International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance ("INCEIF").
Syed Amir Ali ventured into the professional world in 2002 by joining the finance department of Pakistan Refinery Ltd., where he stayed for the next four years. In 2006, driven by a strong passion for using his faculties for the promotion of Islamic Banking, he joined the corporate banking department of Meezan Bank Ltd., which was at that time a very small bank with just 30 branches. For the next 12 years, he remained associated with it, first as Executive Vice President (EVP) and then, as Senior Executive Vice President (SEVP) and witnessed its phenomenal growth till the year 2018, when it was declared as the best bank of Pakistan. He then decided to offer his services to BankIslami to make the institution prosperous and its recognition in the market as a distinct Islamic Banking solution provider. Syed Amir Ali holds MBA degree from Hamdard University. He is a CFA Charterholder and a member of ACCA, ICAP and ICAEW.
Before serving as SEVP Finance & Strategy of PT Bank Syariah Mandiri, Mr. Ade Cahyo Nugroho served as the Director of PT Mandiri Tunas Finance (2015-2016), Deputy Director of PT Mandiri Tunas Finance (2014-2015), DH Decision Support Consumer Finance of PT Bank Mandiri (Persero) Tbk. (2012-2014), Senior Manager of Group Strategic & Performance PT Bank Mandiri (Persero) Tbk (2007-2010), Mr. Ade holds Accounting degree from University of Indonesia and MBA from the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University.
Mr Mabroor Mahmood is now affiliated with Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector (ICD), the private sector wing of Islamic Development Bank. Headquartered in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, ICD extends financing, manages various funds, and provides advisory services for the development of private sector entities in its 52 member countries all over the world. Mr Mahmood joined ICD back in 2005 and now he is serving as Principal-Term Finance for managing ICD’s term finance portfolio. During his career in ICD, Mr Mahmood played instrumental role in approving and disbursing numerous term finance deals that generated significant revenues for ICD. He played leading role in developing ICD’s portfolio in Bangladesh and Uzbekistan, where ICD’s intervention has been quite significant.
For the purpose of completing transactions, he has so far traveled more than 25 countries in four continents. Mr Mahmood completed his Honours and Masters with First Class from the Department of Finance & Banking, University of Dhaka. He later obtained Master of Science (MS) Degree in Finance from the University of Maryland at College Park, USA.
Mr Mahmood Invented a new generation banking model named "Biniog Sathi" that resolves the problem of credit default in the banking industry. The model is now an official initiative of ICD. For developing the model, he received "ICD Knowledge and Innovation Award" and "Emerging Personality of Islamic Microfinance Award" from Global Islamic Microfinance Forum in 2016.
Mr Mahmood regularly writes at Islamic Finance News (IFN) of Malaysia, Financial Express of Bangladesh and at www.islamicbanker.com. He was featured and Interviewed by IFN and CNBC Arabia. He published papers in international journals and presented papers in International Conferences and Forums as a Speaker on behalf of ICD.
