Abstract

Outsized commitments express international investors’ unwavering faith of Asia’s growth story, with China being the engine.

Two developments accentuate China’s position in Asia’s private equity asset class: Hillhouse’s US$10.6 bn fund is the largest for Asia, Ant Financial’s US$14 bn fund raising is the largest by an Asian fintech company.

The fact that a 13-year old-fund management firm, Hillhouse, and a fintech operation that began in 2014, Ant Financial, have been able to garner overwhelming interest from international investors underlines the pulling power of China, Asia’s principal engine of growth.
