Overview

Although the financial markets of Bangladesh have underperformed in recent years relative to the country’s economy, accelerating regulatory reforms could lead to significant market growth.

Cambodia’s economic liberalization began in the 1990s, but the country’s first equity listing did not occur until 2012. The Cambodian government is implementing a variety of measures to accelerate capital market development.

Since an economic transformation in the 1990s, Mongolia’s capital markets have struggled with fundamental problems. The government is working to improve corporate governance and develop the corporate bond market, among other initiatives.

Sri Lanka’s capital markets face many challenges. To address critical needs, the country’s master plan aims to attract global investors, develop new financial instruments, and improve market infrastructure.

Small and limited 20 years ago, the Vietnamese capital market has grown to provide a wide range of products. With favorable prospects, Vietnam must address fundamental challenges to continue evolving and achieve its potential.

Larry Cao
Larry Cao CFA

Larry Cao, CFA, is senior director of industry research at CFA Institute. He conducts original research with a focus on investment industry trends and investment expertise. Mr. Cao’s current research interests include multi-asset strategies and fintech. He frequently speaks at industry conferences on these topics and has more than 20 years of experience in the investment industry. Mr. Cao started his career at the People’s Bank of China as a US dollar fixed-income portfolio manager. He has worked at HSBC as senior manager for the Asia-Pacific region; Munder Capital Management, managing US and international equity portfolios; and Morningstar/Ibbotson Associates, managing multi-asset investment programs for a global financial institution clientele. Mr. Cao has been interviewed by a wide range of business media, including Bloomberg, CNN, the Financial Times, South China Morning Post, and the Wall Street Journal. He pursued graduate studies at Harvard University and was a visiting scholar at MIT.

Asif Khan, CFA
Asif Khan CFA

Asif Khan, CFA, is managing partner and co-founder of EDGE Research & Consulting Limited. EDGE provides investment research to a large number of globally reputed fund managers, commercial banks, and development finance institutions. Mr. Khan has more than 13 years of experience working in both buy-side and sell-side roles covering frontier markets. He is also a founding board member of CFA Society Bangladesh.

Seng Chan Thoeun
Chan Thoeun Seng CFA

Seng Chan Thoeun is managing director at SBI Royal Securities in Phnom Penh. Involved in the Cambodian investment industry for more than 10 years, he has directed the successful completion of several historic transactions, including the IPO of Phnom Penh Water Supply, the IPO of Phnom Penh Autonomous Port, and the IPO of Sihanoukville Autonomous Port. Mr. Seng also oversaw the issuance of the first-ever corporate bond in Cambodia and completed three other public issuances of corporate bonds among the six in total. He holds a master’s degree in international finance from CERAM Business School and has passed the Level I and Level II exams for the CFA Program.

Bayarsaikhan Davaadorj
Bayarsaikhan Davaadorj CFA

Bayarsaikhan Davaadorj, CFA, is founder of Long Term Partners of Mongolia, an investment advisory firm. Previously, he worked as an equity trader at Deutsche Bank and as an investment officer at International Finance Corporation (World Bank Group). Mr. Davaadorj has also been a consultant for the Asian Development Bank, the Japan International Cooperation Agency, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. He is co-founder and served as chair of the Mongolian Society of Financial Analysts.

Vidushan Premathiratne, CFA
Vidushan Premathiratne CFA

Vidushan Premathiratne, CFA, is the founder and managing director of Elon Venture Catalysts, a boutique investment advisory and data analytics company in Sri Lanka. He also is an investment banker with 12 years of experience, including working with Asha Phillip Securities, York Street Partners, and Candor Capital.
Mr. Premathiratne serves as strategist, mentor, and financial adviser for many innovative startups and SMEs in Sri Lanka and has sourced, structured, and negotiated transactions involving debentures and merger and acquisition for leading corporates in Sri Lanka. Leading institutions seek his advisory expertise in such fields as data science, fixed income, derivatives, and digital payments. Mr. Premathiratne holds a bachelor’s degree (honors) in chemical engineering from the University of Nottingham (United Kingdom) and an MBA in marketing from the University of Colombo. He is a member of CMA (Australia) and a Certified Global Business Analyst (Australia).
Mr. Premathiratne is currently reading for his doctorate in business administration at the University of Colombo.

Luc Can
Luc Can

Luc Can is chief economist at the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam and president of the BIDV Training and Research Institute. He is also a member of the National Fiscal and Monetary Policy Advisory Council and the Vietnam National Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation. Dr. Luc holds a DBA and an MBA from Monash University, Australia, both under Australian government scholarships. He was also a (Fulbright) Humphrey Fellow and a Senior Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School.
